Net worth and Career Ron DeSantis:
DeSantis’ career prior to politics included working as an attorney in the military industry. He served as a JAG officer in the U.S. Navy during the Iraq War, resigning his commission after 6 years of service. After leaving active duty, he began working for Morrison and Foerster, a large law firm based in Washington D.C., where he was named partner within 8 years.
While at Morrison and Foerster, DeSantis focused on defending large defense contractors against whistleblower lawsuits brought under federal securities laws. In 2012, DeSantis left Morrison and Foerster to run as a U.S. House candidate from Florida’s newly drawn 6th congressional district against 12-term incumbent Allen West.
After redistricting, the district had changed from a safe Republican seat to one with a slight Democratic advantage, though it had voted for John McCain over Barack Obama in 2008 51%–48%. DeSantis ran unopposed in the Republican primary on August 14, 2012. He defeated Democratic nominee Heather Beaven by 58% to 42%. He took office on January 3, 2013.
During his time in Congress, DeSantis has questioned whether the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was trying to ban certain ammunition for AR-15 rifles, introduced a bill to eliminate the Department of Education, took steps toward allowing doctors to authorize medical marijuana in Florida, and helped add an amendment to the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act that would give military base commanders greater power in cases of sexual assault.
In January 2018 DeSantis announced that he would be running for Governor of Florida, challenging then-incumbent Republican Governor Rick Scott. In August 2018, following Ron Desantis’ appearance on Fox News in which he criticized Florida’s black gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum using a racist dog whistle by saying “the last thing we need to do is monkey this up” by electing a black candidate who will expand Medicaid and increase taxes, it was revealed that he accepted from a man who said Jews were conducting a “white genocide.”
