He served as a JAG officer in the U.S. Navy during the Iraq War, resigning his commission after 6 years of service. In January 2018 DeSantis announced that he would be running for Governor of Florida, challenging then-incumbent Republican Governor Rick Scott. In August 2018, following Ron Desantis’ appearance on Fox News in which he criticized Florida’s black gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum using a racist dog whistle by saying “the last thing we need to do is monkey this up” by electing a black candidate who will expand Medicaid and increase taxes, it was revealed that he accepted from a man who said Jews were conducting a “white genocide.”
