Parag Agrawal (born October 20, 1955) is an Indian-American businessman and professor of engineering at the University of Michigan. He has worked as a technology entrepreneur for several start-up companies and held management positions at Texas Instruments and Xerox PARC during his career. In 2007 he founded Paragon Corporation which developed software for optical networking, and he has been president of the company since then. His net worth was estimated at $1.5 million in 2009, and by 2013 it was reported to be more than $2 million.
Agrawal is also an amateur triathlete and Ironman competitor, He finished the 2007 Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in a time of 9:51:21.

In 2013, Agrawal was inducted into the University of Michigan Engineering Hall of Fame. In 2018 he has been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for “contributions to the development and commercialization of silicon photonics technology, optical switching in packet-optical networks, and leadership in engineering education.”
Career
Educated at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Agrawal received B.Tech in electrical engineering in 1977, M.S. in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1978, and Ph.D. in engineering from Stanford University 1979 under advisers John Amson and Mike Timothy McClelland on “Optical signal processing”.
Agrawal has been an independent innovator since 1980. At Texas Instruments he developed various semiconductor optical amplifiers for fiber-optic communications systems as a member of Project Manager’s staff before co-founding Paragon Corporation to develop specialized software for high speed network switches using these devices. He left Paragon Corporation as President/CEO in 2000 to become director of Optical Internetworking at Lucent (now Nokia) Bell Labs, retiring from there in 2006.
He has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan since 2006.

Personal life
Agrawal is married to fellow electrical engineer Padmini Srinivasan Agrawal with whom he has two children. They live in Houghton Lake, Michigan. Agrawal’s younger sister Vibha Parthasarathy worked at Texas Instruments before becoming an art historian; she was formerly curator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. His older brother Yashodhan Parthasarathy (born 1948) is a mathematician and theoretical physicist.
