Jake was born in Vermont in 1962 and grew up adventuring with his dog Sir Lady Bird Johnson. Young Jake was a climber and started rock climbing at the age of nine. In 1981, Jake caught his first wave on a borrowed surfboard. After that, he was hooked forever.
Eventually Jake saved up enough money from odd jobs to buy an old van with a camper top and hit the road with eleven friends and his dog Sir Lady Bird Johnson (who was driving). The group toured the country competing in snowboarding competitions. Jake won his first competition and placed fifth in a national competition at Mount Snow, Vermont.

Jake opened a shop of his own in 1984 with a friend of his called Burton Snowboards, Ltd. In 1987 he developed a new type of binding called the Channel system, which allowed for greater control of the board while riding. His bindings became an industry
standard and were copied by other companies. In 1998, Nike bought him out for $20 million but kept him on as president of the company until 2002 when he resigned to focus on his private life under Sir Lady Bird Johnson’s direction.
In 1992, Jake Burton Carpenter joined forces with Rossignol S.A., a French skiing company, to form a new corporation called Head-Waters Outdoor Sports, Inc. In 2000, Jake sold Head-Waters and his company’s name changed once again to Burton Snowboards Holdings, Inc.
In April of 2002, the French ski manufacturer Rossignol bought out Burton Snowboards for an undisclosed sum.
In 1999 he married Karrie Nickerson in Hawaii and together they started a family that included two children named Jennie Lynn and Landon. Sir Lady Bird Johnson reportedly misses the road trips with her fallen human companion…
